Time Management in the Cloud - Switching from Time Matters

Due to recent computer issues, I am looking into moving my practice to the cloud. I have already secured Office 365, but I need to do something about my practice management software. I currently use Time Matters and love it, but there are some key features I would need in a program like Clio, RocketMatter, or MyCase. TM has data types for Matters, Calendar, Contact, To Do, Phone Calls, Mail, and E-mail. It also has a Timeline feature where you can see all of the data type entries in a Matter in chronological order. This is awesome and allows me to see, at a glance, the progression of the case. Do any of these cloud programs have these features (or most of them)? I can adjust my procedures somewhat to adapt to a new program, but these features are invaluable. Other programs besides those 3 that might have those features? Thoughts? Thanks!

    The requirements you've described are basically just what practice management software does—organize various types of data related to a case/matter. However, all the ones you mentioned do things a bit differently than Time Matters and it's impossible to say whether you'll be able to adjust unless you give them a try.

    But if what you really want is Time Matters but in the cloud, why not just move it to the cloud with Abacus Private Cloud? That's actually a great solution for people who like what they have and just want to move it to the cloud.

  • I have started to look into Abacus and others, and it looks like the cost would be significantly more than Clio or another cloud based system. A few years ago I was looking to switch away from TM (before the cloud) and could not find another solution that had the Timeline view or Phone/Mail/E-Mail data item types. Since you seem to know a lot about the stuff, I thought you might know which of them is closest to TM. Anyone else out there know?

    Not AbacusLaw; Abacus Private Cloud. You'd keep using Time Matters, just remotely in the cloud.

  • I understand. I was referring to Abacus Private Cloud when talking about expense. Some of the platform services I have looked at have been rather expensive (well over $100 per seat) while the rest don't set forth pricing; they offer a custom quote. I agree that hosting TM in the cloud would allow me to keep using what I know while being in the cloud, and I am continuing to look into that. At the same time, however, I wanted to see how viable the option is to switch to something like Clio or RocketMatter. Has anyone out there switched from TM to Clio/RocketMatter/MyCase? Can you give me any input? Thanks!

    People make the switch all the time. Realistically Time Matters is legacy software at this point. The only reason to use it is if you are already committed to it. Which you are, so sticking with it isn't a bad idea.

    However, since you are interested in switching I think you should give Clio a try. There's a free trial and it will give you a much better idea than reading about it (although our user guide and Clio thread are good resources).

    I say to try Clio because it will give you a good general idea of what cloud-based practice management software is like. You will get a good idea of what you like and if you think anything you need is missing, and then you can come back and say "I liked Clio but I need X," and we can point you in the right direction.
